Our Constitution Protects Us From Ambitious Politicians

The founders of our nation created our Constitution in order to protect us the citizenry from the intrusions of those in government. They had seen the work of kings and tyrants in the Old World. They envisioned something better for the new nation they were helping to form. They were especially concerned that the federal government should be limited in its reach. The three separate branches of government were one restraint, the Bill of Rights another. What they did not anticipate and take into account was the slow but steady erosion of reverence and respect for the Constitution and the ambition of some presidents and congressional leaders to ignore the restrictions of their office.

Three developments in the world of political philosophy also have played a part in bringing us to the state of confusion we now endure. The emergence of political liberalism, which loathes the past and all restraints, gave us a type of politician who reinterprets the Constitution to make it say that which he wants it to say. This allows him to circumvent it by political and judicial semantics. The second is secularism which denies and rejects the moral and religious base on which our nation and government were founded. It also allows politicians to do as they please without concern for the morality of their conduct. Third is relativism which allows presidents, congressional leaders and judges to ignore the rights guaranteed the people by insisting that nothing is absolute or written in stone. Religious values are considered by them to be a nuisance to be swept aside or trampled on.

This situation was boldly displayed the last few days when the President and his allies in Congress made a bold attempt to challenge the concept of freedom of religion and the free exercise thereof by forcing religious institutions to provide free contraception and abortifacients to their employees. The penalty for refusing to comply would be the assessment of heavy fines. Political liberals and secularists cheered the President and loudly defended his move. Only in the face of massive opposition was he forced to retreat from that intrusion.

Smarting from his embarrassing defeat, the President struck back by ordering insurance companies to provide these same services without charge.

No admission was made that the president had overreached his Constitutional authority. This leaves us to assume that given the right circumstances and issue he would not hesitate to try the same move again. This is a vital issue in this election year. Granted it is not the kind of story the media loves to talk about, but it should motivate every citizen who cherishes the liberty and freedom our Constitution affords us.
