The Worst of Crimes

A regular report of our daily news is the murder of another young child. The victims range from newborn infants to toddlers and some of ten or more years. Three to five are killed daily in our nation. The perpetrators of these horrendous crimes range from mothers who don’t want a baby, to live in boyfriends who don’t want to be disturbed by a fretful baby, to sociopaths who find some sordid pleasure in beating little kids. Alcohol and drug abuse play a large role in these murders. Occasionally they are the result of a power struggle between the mother and father. From 1976 to 1994, 33,000 American children were murdered. Some 200 mothers kill their babies each year.
• Thirty-eight years ago, a segment of our society demanded and got the legal right to abort any unwanted baby. This includes babes in the third trimester of development. The number legally disposed of now numbers some 50 million.
• In this same time period the number of child murders has skyrocketed. The public conscience has been seared concerning the worth and value of the unborn child. The accompanying effect has been to harden the hearts of many people toward young children who escaped the fate of those aborted.
• In our liberated society, the murder of infants is so common that judges and courts routinely impose minimal punishment on those found guilty. The permissive mind can conjure up numerous reasons to explain and rationalize the crime. In some cases the murderous mother is dismissed without penalty. From January to October of this year Arizona had 19 child murders. The national average is 3-5 child murders per day..
• Narcissistic people, many of whom grew up without siblings, can’t imagine sharing life with and being responsible for a helpless infant. Hedonistic adults who live for self-indulgence and pleasure refuse to be burdened with a child. Abusers of drugs and alcohol are often irritable and hostile and their anger is poured out on the child in their midst.
The young child is unable to defend himself or to provide his needs. In a wholesome setting with responsible parents, they will provide for the child and protect him or her from harm. In cases where the family is irresponsible and dysfunctional, society must protect the little ones. This is a duty not just of Child Protection Service workers, but of all decent people. To do less is criminal negligence.
The law of earliest humanity said, "Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed." The reason for this statute is then given "for in the image of God made he man" (Gen. 9:6). For murder, killing with malice, the penalty was death. Of all the crimes that demand that ultimate penalty, none is more deserving than wilful murder of a helpless child. If people know the penalty of death awaits them if they kill a little one, they will be less inclined to do so. Any unwanted child is wanted by someone. Let them be adopted. There is no justification for child murder.
