Living in a generation of people, many of whom were raised on a rich diet of self-esteem, we encounter a steady flow of men and women who are sure they are fabulous in one or many areas of life.
According to Webster, the word fabulous means "resembling a fable, incredible, marvelous." The first of these definitions caught my eye, because when people begin to tell us how great or fabulous they are, it doesn’t take long to discern their story is nothing more than a fable.
Solomon was renowned for his wisdom. He advised his readers, "Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth" (Prov. 27:2).
Christians tend not to think or boast of themselves as fabulous. The Founder of our faith taught us, that "He that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled; and whosoever shall humble himself shall be exalted" (Matt. 23:11-12). The blessings of heaven are promised to the humble rather than to the boastful. The Apostle Peter teaches us to "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God that he may exalt you in due time." The reason is "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble" (I Pet. 5:5).
Looking at the second definition of fabulous, which involves the words "incredible and marvelous" I can say that I serve a fabulous God and have a fabulous Savior. I have a fabulous wife. I live in a fabulous nation. I have read some fabulous books and have seen some fabulous sites of nature. I have been blessed to see some fabulous works of art and hear some fabulous musical presentations. I have enjoyed a fabulous day. That is really close enough to fabulous for me.
