Forrest Gump’s mother was neither a politician, a philosopher, or a professor, but she figured out that calling a person ignorant or stupid does not make it so. She had learned that stupid is as stupid does. Sometimes the person who calls others stupid behaves in a way that can only be described as stupid.

I once saw a drunken soldier challenging an MP who had his billy club in his raised hand. The drunk made three or four efforts to hit the MP who kept warning him to cease resisting arrest. Finally the drunk’s hand brushed the MP’s face and "whack!" The night stick hit him in the mouth and down went the drunk like a dropped bag of cement. His teeth were scattered on the floor. The MP dragged him across the floor to the waiting van where his dazed body was dumped..

That drunk soldier may have been a rocket scientist, but his behavior demonstrated what Ms. Gump said. Stupid is as stupid does!

Back when Jimmy Carter was president, I met a man who was a home builder. He built high ticket homes. The problem was, with interest rates at 20 %, no one was buying. The builder was in serious financial straits. He owed the banks lots of money. He had houses he could not sell. His solution was to keep getting interim loans and building more houses. Each new loan added another $100,000 to his indebtedness. Sadly, he learned that you can’t get out of debt by borrowing and spending more money. The banks finally foreclosed and took every thing he had including the house he and his family lived in. Stupid is as stupid does.

Our political leaders have spent our nation into massive debt. Powerful voices in Washington have sought to deal with our crippling debt by borrowing trillions of additional money and spending it. As the little old lady from Alabama said, "Stupid is as stupid does." John Waddey
