Three...make That Four Wishes

In the legendary stories of the past, we read of people granted a limited number of wishes by powers greater than themselves. If I could have my wishes granted, I would choose not three but four.
My first wish is that our nation would return to its spiritual and moral roots. Personally I have lived long enough to see vast changes in our society’s values and conduct. Being an avid reader I have read hundreds of books about America and her people. From a nation whose citizens were primarily Christians, we have become a nation half of which never darken the door of a church. We were are society where most people honored a social code that demanded respect for one’s neighbor and his property. Today neither ones person nor his property is safe. Prior to the 1970s we were a people with a high regard for human life. That respect has been seriously eroded by our acceptance of legal abortion on demand. Violence and murder are a deadly plague among us. We use to instil moral values in our children at home, in school and in church. Now public schools do not, many homes fail and many children never attend church. What a price we are paying for the abandonment of our moral and spiritual roots. A tree whose roots are rotting will soon die and so will a nation.
My third wish is that my grand children would have the same opportunity to enjoy financial security, stability and success that I have known. Reckless politicians have squandered the treasure of the world’s richest nation. They have fettered us and children yet to be born with a massive debt that may well result in the financial collapse of our nation. Our money has lost much of its value; our investments have lost even more. Still the dunderheads of D.C. spend recklessly and give away to undeserving and ungrateful people and nations the funds honest, hardworking citizens have earned.
King Solomon liked to say "There are three things, yea four..." So I offer my fourth wish: that we could have new leadership for our nation. We need leaders who love and are proud of our country; Leaders who recognize her exceptionalism among nations past and present; Leaders who appreciate the role that Christianity played in the founding of our nation and society; Leaders who love and respect our democratic heritage and our free-market economy; Leaders who live by a high personal code of duty and honor first to God, to country and self.
As Louie Armstong use to sing, "What a wonderful world that would be."
