Are We Feeding the Monster That Wants To Devour Us

I read of a family who raised a giant python snake that later attacked and killed their child. Another man raised tigers, then one day his pet tiger attacked him and almost killed him.
Across North Africa and the Middle East Arab Muslims have risen up against the tyrants that have long dominated them. In most cases the tyrants were happy to maintain the status quo regarding Israel and were determined to hold the jihadists in check. When the uprisings began, President Obama’s team and our national media immediately defined them as a revolution for democracy...like our forefathers pursued. Encouragement was given to the protesters in the streets and the old tyrants were pressured to step down. Taking all the credit they could, administration officials labeled it "The Arab Spring." A few weeks later and we were arming the revolutionaries in Libya and assisting them with our aircraft and missiles in an undeclared war against Libya’s Gaddafi.
A quarter century ago we armed the jihadists in Afghanistan to resist the Russians. Later they used those very weapons against us. Are we aiding and encouraging a revolution that will turn the countries affected into militant enemies of America? Will they use our aid and weapons to make war against us? Are we feeding the serpent who will eat our child? Are we feeding the tiger that will one day attack us. Presidents serve one or two terms and then retire in luxury. The rest of us have to live with the decisions they made. A wise man will not feed the monster.

But then once our "foreign aid dollar" leaves our hands, we don't have much say on how it gets spent, or in whose hands it ends up. In the name of stability or fighting our current enemy, we have lined the pockets of corrupt families of current dictators around the world for decades. As the "Arab Spring" turns into "Summer", I fear there will be an "Autumn of Regret". As you do. Good article. People seem to think that just because you have a "democracy", that doesn't mean there won't be guns at the voting booth, and hairy fingered thugs with machine guns sitting near the ballot boxes.
