Among the duties incumbent on all Christians is that "supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority..." (I Tim. 2:1-2).
Living in a democracy we have as our head of state, a president, not a king. This does not lessen or change our responsibility to pray for our ruler.
Note well that God does not say:
* Pray for the president if you voted for him. Or,
* Pray for him if you like him. Or,
* Pray for him if he represents your favorite political party. Or,
* Pray for him if he represents your moral, political or social views.
We must pray for our president because God has instructed us to do so. Remember, when Paul wrote, the world was governed by the decadent, wicked Nero, emperor of the Roman Empire, who persecuted the Christians. Nevertheless, they were to pray for him that they might live a tranquil and quite life in all godliness and gravity." (I Tim. 2:2).
Paul then reminded them "This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior..." (I Tim. 2:3). It still is. Let us not forget this duty when we pray.
John,Thanks for writing this; and especially for adding this: "...Let us not forget this duty when we pray...."
We are required to pray for all men even our enemies and regardless if we voted,. like or approve or disapprove we should always lift our leaders and nation and all men up in prayer. Thanks you for the reminder.
